The Thompson received the name “Tommy Gun” from the media when the gun became popular in the prohibition/depression era from criminals and gangsters alike. In 1938 the US military adopted the Thompson serving in WWII and beyond. It was also used by marines in the Banana War as well as in China. It fires from the open bolt position. Because of its high quality and craftsmanship it is now a collector’s item.
